While I was staying in Madrid in November of 2011 I took a day trip to Bilbao to see one of Frank Gehry’s genius buildings and a wonderful contemporary art museum. I took a 4-6 hour bus ride to this small city on the coast and walked directly from the bus station to the museum. I first noticed the museum when I saw the top of a giant poppy dog sculpture. This was a good sign, Jeff Koons has been here. The architecture was breath taking, there were multiple Richard Serra pieces inside and a great photography exhibit. The museum was a win in my book and the city was beautiful. Unfortunately my visit wasn’t as good as it could have been. 30 minutes after I left the museum my day was ruined by rain and strong winds. But I am so glad I was able to go see the museum. I hope to be able to go back someday.
